- Prologue The Burrito Index An ISP call center, a Taco Bell analogy for the OSI model, and the Java dashboard that turned paper tallies into real-time pattern detection. Where the detective learned to build the instrument nobody asked for.
- Layer 1 · Physical The Slow Squeeze Nylon zip ties cranked to yield strength on 3,200 patch cables. Viscoelastic creep deforming the jackets over years. By the time the bit errors surface in monitoring, the damage is archaeological.
- Layer 2 · Data Link The Kitchen Closet A degrading terminator on a ThinNet segment. A NIC flooding a switch at line speed. Two failures, years apart, in the home network where the detective learned to read a dying link layer by pulling cables and watching lights.
- Layer 3 · Network The Clean Room Three worms hit a global enterprise simultaneously. The entire network drowns in ICMP traffic from a vigilante worm trying to cure the one before it. One satellite office survives because the guy running it was paranoid about visitors.
- Layer 4 · Transport Friendly Fire Slashdot sends ten thousand readers to a website running on a 640k DSL line. The server lives in a kitchen closet. The only way to survive is to strip every page to bare HTML, cache it in RAM, and pray.
- Layer 5 · Session The Phantom Limb The ODBC driver insists the database doesn't exist. Oracle's own tools connect fine. Six phantom HOME entries in the registry, a graveyard of failed installs, and a Microsoft driver hardcoded to knock on the first door only.
- Layer 6 · Presentation Dead Letters A dead man's database. 852 Japanese game titles corrupted by a chain of encoding misinterpretations spanning decades. Shift-JIS stored as latin1, exported through tools that didn't ask the right questions, and the only person who understood the schema died on a treadmill.
- Layer 7 · Application The Balloon Job Ninety-two VMs suffocating in broad daylight. The hypervisor's balloon driver reclaims memory from idle guests, killing WebSphere at 3 AM and erasing the evidence before anyone logs in to check. The crime scene that cleans itself.
